11am at Chingford Station (Zone 5) We will finish at between 5pm and 6pm at the same Station]
Update Friday 14 October - The Forest is generally dry and
the weather looks fine for Sunday. Wear decent footwear as we will be walking over uneven ground some of the time. Bring what you need to eat and
drink and a plastic bag to sit on. See details below.Â
Autumn is a wonderful time to be in the Forest. We will meet at
Chingford Railway Station (Zone 5 - you can use Oyster) which is just 26 minutes from Liverpool Street, at 11am and return to the same station between 5pm and 6pm. The
walk will be about 10km (6 miles) long and take in a variety of forest and some beautiful views. Please wear decent footwear, and bring whatever you want to eat and
drink, plus something to sit on for the meditations as it may be damp (a plastic bag is sufficient).
Please email me if you intend to be there so I have an idea of numbers - ankur@schoolofawareness.co.uk
Epping Forest
- Epping Forest is the largest public open space in the London area at almost 6,000 acres. It was originally designated as a Royal Forest in the 12th Century and used for hunting by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. As well as being a popular area for recreation and enjoyment it is also of national and international conservation importance with two thirds of it being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation and a contains Iron Age earthworks which are about 2,500 years old. It is famed for its oak trees many of which are over 300 years old. It was preserved ‘for all time’ for the people by an Act of Parliament in 1878.
The Walk
- The walk will be about 10 km (6 miles) - We will head into Epping Forest encountering a variety of densely wooded areas, some open spaces and maybe wildlife. In this part of the forest we also get some lovely views.
Meditations
- Depending on the weather, there will be two or three 20 to 30 minute meditations during the day using whatever the forest brings us in terms of sight, sound and touch to focus our attention.
Food & Drink
- Please whatever you want to eat and drink. You may also want to bring something to sit on, even if it is just a bin bag, as the forest floor may be damp.
Meeting Point - Chingford
Railway Station (Zone 5 - you can use your Oyster Card) - takes just 26 mins from Liverpool street - the trains are every 15 minutes, leaving at 03, 18, 33 and
48 mins past the hour. Catch the 10.18 or 10.33 departures to get there by 11am. We may wait for the 10.48, text me if you are on it, but no later. I will
be outside the station main exit with a ‘Meetup’ sign. Bus - There several buses which go to Chingford Railway station. Car - There is free parking
opposite the Hunting Lodge (see below) but if this is full there is a larger car park about 5 mins walk from the station just off Bury Road - just after
the Golf Club car park - from the Hunting Lodge go down the (steeper) hill and turn first right.
Times - We will meet at 11am. We will return to the same station between 5pm and 6pm.
Mobile phone - On the day you will be able to contact me on 077 345 33827.
Weather
- Clearly this event is dependent on the weather! There is natural cover under the trees but no (man-made) shelter. Check this site on the evening before/morning of the event for any updates especially if it looks like it may rain, or if the preceding days have been very wet.
Footwear
- Again this depends upon the weather, but in any case it is likely to be muddy in places. Some of the time we will be walking off-track on uneven ground so walking boots with ankle support are recommended.
Toilets
- Toilet facilities are provided by nature! There are also toilets at Chingford Station - you may have to ask at the ticket office for the key.
Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge
- Built in 1543 by Henry VIII for watching the hunt and entertaining, this timber framed building is open to look around from 10am - admission is free. We will
not
have time to look around, so if you want to see it get there early and we will meet you at the back of the hunting lodge (the side away from the road at 11.15am). To get to the lodge turn right out of the station and walk along the main road for for about 5 mins up the hill - it is a smallish 3 storey white building next to the road - just past the similarly described but much larger pub!
This event is FREE. It is being organised
by Ankur on behalf of School of Awareness.
